Your Next House Could be Built from Hemp

Ever wanted a house made out of weed?

Well it’s not quite the same but the hemp plant is starting to gain acceptance in the construction industry.

The fibers of the plant are incredibly strong, and can be made into bricks. These bricks provide great insulation, are fire resistant, and are 100% sustainable and eco-friendly.

In Australia, Southern Cross University has plans to build homes out of these hemp bricks. The north coast is great for growing the low-THC strain of cannabis used for hemp products, and the university has been experimenting with manufacturing the bricks.

Keith Bolton is the leader of the project.

“We’re going to be planting about 2.5 million hemp plants this year,” he explained “It’s got the same structural integrity, it’s a lot lighter and it’s got much better insulation qualities,”

Hemp has long been used in a huge variety of different industries for a large number of uses, so it’s not surprising that it could be made into bricks as well.

It may not be surprising but it’s great news!
