The Power Monkey Explorer Solar Charger
Well if that isn’t a terribly chosen name for a cool ecogadget, I’m not sure what is. Thankfully, the “Power Monkey” is cool enough to make up for it.
The charger does charging a bit differently than other charger’s we’ve talked about. It charges a battery pack which you can then use to charge your devices. You can still use the solar charger directly without the battery pack, but you’ll be thankful for a charged pack in the middle of the night when your iPod dies as well. 2 ways to charge your devices? Great improvement!
Additionally, this solar charger comes with almost any kind of connector you’d ever need, even USB to charge your iPod.
More information and photos after the break.
Here’s a full list of the connector’s included:
- Nokia & mini Nokia
- Motorola, Samsung, Siemens & Sony Ericsson
- USB connectors power up iPods and accessories, MP3players, PDAs, smart mobile phones, digital cameras, games consoles, BlackBerrys, Bluetooth headsets and many more digital devices
- iPod (3rd,4th,5th Gen), Mini, Nano, Photo, Video, Shuffle
- Includes mains travel charger for use in 150 countries -110V to 240V

The Power Monkey also features an LCD screen to show charge levels. The battery pack can power your devices for the following lengths of time:
- All iPods - 40 hours
- Mobile phones - 96 hours
- Digital cameras - 1600 pictures
- PSPs - 5 hours
- MP3s/MP4s - 6 hours
- PDAs - 48 hours

Of course, if you’re using the direct solar power option, you’re devices will last as long as it’s sunny!
The battery measures 90 x 45 x 38 mm and weighs only 83g. It has a capacity of 2200mA, and outputs at 700mA max.

The solar charger measures 110 x 70 x 10 mm, and is a bit lighter at 82g. It has a current of 200mA at 5V.

The Power Monkey is a bit expensive however, selling for $139 from Earth Tech Products.
