Pimp Your Bike: Cerevellum

Cerevellum

Cars are getting greener all the time, but still nothing compares to the good ol’ bicycle. Unfortunately, most bikes don’t come with nearly as many cool gadgets as most cars or trucks. GPS, Speedometers, Clocks, Radios, all cool gadgets that motorists enjoy and bicyclists often have to deal without.

Sure, we can all claim we don’t need these extra gadgets, but I doubt the average bicyclists would turn them down if they were available. Well, if some extra gadgets sound good to you, your prayers have been answered.

This is the Cerevellum, and ultra-cool information center for your bike. It provides many of the features available on a car, but all in a small package easily attachable for your bike (just be sure to lock it up! This thing would be quite attractive to thieves).

The Cerevellum “base unit” is a mini-computer that would attach to your handlebars, you can then attach up to 4 different modules using the base unit’s 4 USB connections.

So what features can you get with the Cerevellum? There are 6 different modules that can be added to the base unit.

Hindsight is one of the coolest modules. It brings the rear-view mirror on a car to your bike. Hindsight includes a small camera that is placed either on your handlebars (facing backward) or on the back of your bike. It feeds information to the base-unit, and a live video feed from behind your bike is displayed on the base unit’s screen.

Pimp Your Bike: Bike Fast Tray

Bikefast Tray

So your running late, havn’t eaten breakfast, and you’re incredible jealous at the (usually awkward) way drivers get to eat in their car while you’re off saving the environment on a bicycle. It happens, but it shouldn’t deter you from biking to wherever you have to go.

Well never be jealous of your emissions-emitting friends and their space for breakfast again! Meet the  BikeFast Tray. It’s a tray that snaps onto the front of your bike, giving you convenient space for your breakfast while you’re on your bike.

It has a spot for food, and a cup-holder for your fair-trade coffee. Bike Design mentions the obvious problem here though: wouldn’t wind blow your breakfast away? It would seem likely, and I would agree a shield on some-kind would be a great addition, but this is only a concept anyway.

Still, some great creative thinking went into this design, and something like this would be a pretty cool addition for those time-deprived environmentalists on their way to work. It sure beats one of those girly baskets!

Pimp Your Bike: Combination Bike Trailer/Green Generator

navitas 1

The Navitas bicycle trailer is a new concept in portable green power.

Designed by Paul Smith, a final year design student at the University of Derby in England, the Navitas is “a pure concept in sustainable transport” explained Smith.

The trailer is a bit of a transformer. It’s wheel splits apart into 3 sections which serve as a wind turbine, and a compact solar panel provides another source of power in case of low wind.  These work together to charge the 24v on-board battery.

The trailer provides power output via a 12v cigarette lighter, and a USB port, allowing you to charge all your USB devices. Charge your iPod on the go!

Surprisingly, there’s no standard outlet, however power inverters intended for cars could be used in the cigarette lighter to provide standard outlets.

It clips easily to the seat post, and as an added eco-bonus, utilized all-LED brake and hazard lights.

This is a fantastic concept, however a method to charge the battery, even just a small charge, without  disconnecting and setting up the whole trailer should have been included, I wouldn’t want to stop just to charge the battery.

This is only a concept, and not currently available for sale, but it certainly seems marketable, and if it ever hits store shelves, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Pimp your Bike: Wireless iPod Speaker

cyfi

One downside of riding a bike is the lack of a stereo. Sure, you’ve got your iPod, but it’s not quite the same.

There’s nothing quite like blasting some tunes in the summer with the windows open, and yes, I know that’s not the most eco-friendly thing to, but sometimes you just can’t help it!

Well now us bikers can take part too. Meet cy-fi,  the world’s first wireless bicycle iPod speaker. The system is only about 3 ounces, and broadcasts to wireless speaker (1 included) that mounts to almost any frame.

I thought it interesting that they mentioned the system supports up to 4 speakers through “multipoint broadcasting”. Could this mean surround-sound on your bike? We can only guess at this point.

This is a pretty sweet way to pump the tunes on your bike, but I’d really like to see a way to power the iPod through something like peddle power or solar. The company website reports the device only has a battery life of about 6 hours.

You can pre-order this for $149.95 from mycyfi.com.
